Purpose

This institute is a leadership program aimed at developing freshman and sophomore students.  LLI consists of workshops, a retreat, and participation in the Latino Leadership Summit.  The program is focused on leadership development, networking and social justice training.  Past participants of the program have gone on to become successful campus leaders.

This year’s theme is centered on gender equality - an issue that affects not only women but men as well, for effectively putting 50% of the world’s population in a disadvantaged position, creating a fragile and unproductive atmosphere for all of us.  The goal of this year’s LLI, then, is to acquaint us with equality, and what we can do to achieve that.

The weekly sessions will incorporate lectures, presentations, and other programming facilitated by a variety of presenters.  These sessions will provide background in leadership, how groups work and program planning to enhance personal and professional development and to develop and implement programs for the campus community.

Expectations

In order to get the most out of the Latino Leadership Institute every participant is expect to attend all LLI activities. All class sessions are mandatory.  If you must miss one class prior approval is required.  Two missed sessions will result in being dropped from future participation in LLI.

Part of the Latino Leadership Institute will require all participants to attend the Latino Leadership Summit, taking place October 23-24, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency in Austin, Texas. Your application will be paid for by the institute, so you will be able to attend the conference at NO COST.

We will also have an end of the institute retreat on November 21 that will provide attendees a networking opportunity that will give them a chance to meet other leaders in a non-work style setting.

SAFE SPACE: We also expect all LLI participants to come into the institute with an open mind. Many of you will be meeting various kinds of leaders with various backgrounds and experiences and we want everyone to be open to spirited dialogue and new and challenging ideas.
